Project plan

Tasks

Task 1 - The Design phase

The primary goal of the design phase is to (A) develop an architecture specification for the PEPPOL infrastructure and (B) to establish an operational e-business infrastructure to support activities in WP2-WP5. Having an operational infrastructure at a very early staged is believed to be a key success factor to the PEPPOL project. First of all it allows the other WP’s to test the exchange of business documents only one year into the project. Secondly, the early testing of the infrastructure allows WP8 to fine-tune the architecture and building blocks as a result of user feedback from WP2-WP5.

Task 2 - The Construction phase

The construction phase starts with a two day workshop for adopters and IT-architects. The first day is devoted to IT-architecture and the second day is devoted adopters wishing to know more about how to connect to the infrastructure. The infrastructure is now open for lab testing and it is possible to exchange business documents for test purposes. The construction phase consists of two main software development iterations. The first iteration is coined “Release Candidate 1” (RC1). The objective is to provide production quality components and to have the components tested in live operational environments. The second iteration is coined “Golden Master” (GM) and the purpose of this iteration is to solve any problems identified in RC1 and release a final production release of all components.

Parallel to the software development is a substantial task with connecting existing national infrastructure to the PEPPOL infrastructure. It is estimated that establishing a production ready national gateway will require 12 work months of effort per country. Simple test environments can be set up in a few days, but practical experience has demonstrated that setting up real scalable and reliable solutions will require several months of preparation and configuration.

Task 3 - The Operational phase

The focus in the operational phase is on stabilizing and maintenance of the PEPPL infrastructure. Identified difficulties for existing operation must be eliminated and EU member countries outside the PEPPOL project should be allowed to connect to the infrastructure. A new service pack for the infrastructure components will be released and two workshops will be held to support newcomers.

Deliverables

  • D8.1: Beta version of services required for the technical interoperability layer, including: a Federated service and business process registry, a security token service, a gateway, a web service toolkit and a test framework. This deliverable will also include a consolidated list of business requirements as well as a detailed specification of the architecture. (M12)

  • D8.2: Demo version (Golden Master) of the technical interoperability layer completed. Included with this deliverable will be an updated version of the specification of the architecture as well as the establishment of a technical support organization. (M20)

  • D8.3: Final infrastructure report and recommendations for European Roll-Out. (M30)
