The Pan-European Public Procurement Online Project (PEPPOL) received an enthusiastic reception by politicians and senior representatives of the European Commission at the Borderless eGovernment Services for Europeans conference in Poznan, Poland, on the 17 and 18 of November, 2011. The conference brought together more than 800 participants from around the world, including representatives of national, regional and local administrations, the business community, NGOs and technology experts.

In the opening speech, Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission (EC) with responsibility for the Digital Agenda, spoke about the need to "build, connect and grow”, and about the European Commission's commitment to the proposal for the 9 billion euros to connect Europe digitally (as part of the "Connecting Europe Facility"). She indicated that building pan-European digital public services in the Connecting Europe Facility is a critical decision facing the Council and Parliament.

As one of the European Commission’s Large Scale Pilot Projects for cross-border services (LSPs), PEPPOL presented its growing number of implementations and also facilitated discussions with a wide variety of stakeholders over its long-term sustainability.

“Politicians and EC representatives wanted to see real results - market confidence in the viability of the PEPPOL infrastructure, services and standards”, said AndrĂ© Hoddevik, PEPPOL Project Director. “During the conference we could demonstrate what has been accomplished and our plans for future growth and support after the pilot period.”

At the conference, both public and private sector representatives stressed the importance of EU governmental policies supporting the use of eProcurement throughout the public sector and to ensure rapid and widespread adoption of PEPPOL.

“We see the way in which PEPPOL standards and services are being integrated into public eProcurement platforms in Italy, Denmark, Norway, Austria and France, as a demonstration of increasing confidence in PEPPOL’s future” said Mr Hoddevik. “We believe this momentum will gather pace in the coming months as we connect more eProcurement communities throughout the EU.”
