The EU funded e-Freight project has selected, after investigating alternatives, the Pan-European Public Procurement Online (PEPPOL) transport infrastructure for electronic information exchange. e-Freight’s initial pilot is between DSV, a global supplier of transport and logistics solutions, and STENA Line, one of the world's largest ferry operators. The initial implementation relates to transport of goods between Gothenburg, Sweden and Germany.
e-Freight is an EU funded research and development project that aims to enable paperless freight transport and logistics in a co-modal context. e-Freight fosters interoperability and low-cost, standardised information exchange between freight transport and logistics stakeholders. e-Freight results are being validated and demonstrated in a number of business cases.
“We chose PEPPOL because the infrastructure requirements we developed for the exchange of our electronic transport documents were already operational in PEPPOL. This can save us time and money, and gives us the efficiency and security in electronic information exchange that we are looking for” - said Jan Tore Pedersen, e-Freight Project Director.
Information about available transport services, bookings, confirmations, itineraries, and status information will be exchanged over the PEPPOL infrastructure in the e-Freight implementation. As a result, freight will be able to move freely across borders without handling of paper documents. Organisations will be able to follow the progress of the transactions quickly and easily.
PEPPOL components such as eInvoicing and eOrders are using the same standards as the messages developed by e-Freight. ” It is a clear ambition of the e-Freight project to make use of this situation to later provide an e-Fulfilment capability to the PEPPOL user community” - stated the e-Freight Project Director.
“e-Freight’s adoption of PEPPOL signals that PEPPOL’s approach to business document exchange can truly be used beyond public procurement,” said André Hoddevik, PEPPOL Project Director. “In addition to business-to-government exchanges, PEPPOL can also provide business-to-business operations with a standards-based solution to streamline processes across industries.”
Initiated in 2008, PEPPOL provides the IT components and services for cross-border public eProcurement in Europe. By connecting eProcurement communities and platforms on a standardised backbone, companies can gain access to a vast public procurement market, resulting in increased opportunities for businesses, greater efficiencies and lower costs.
IT service and solution providers are key enablers of PEPPOL connectivity, and are now developing a number of value-added services for their clients. Following the completion of the project, it is expected that PEPPOL usage will expand through a combination of public and private sector adoption.
